Yes, this is one of those super long, “serious posts” about Fantage 🙂 Click here if you haven’t seen my first one.

Recently, I came across a link from a site called GlassDoor that contains reviews written by past Fantage employees. It was informative and depressing. Here are some screenshots, just in case they are ever taken down. Click to enlarge. You can read these yourself at http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Fantage-Reviews-E407395.htm

fantage7 fantage6 fantage5 fantage4 fantage3 fantage2 fantage1

From this point on, everything is my opinion only. Numbers in parenthesis are used to cite the picture I quoted so you can refer back to it.

The stuff I underlined in red are the things that really angered me and caused me to look down on the members of the “senior management,” as they called it.

“Insane deadlines” (2)
This was a common point among most of the reviews. I was especially unhappy when I read the part about staying until 1 AM and not being paid overtime. I feel really bad for all the times I complained about the events being late, because the employees were most likely working like crazy for hours already.

“Your well being and opinions are of no concern to the upper management” (2) and “narrow-minded and does not like change” (3)
I’m actually not surprised. Our opinions are of no concern to them either. The closest we’ve ever come to “voting” is Vintage Gold, and it’s really obvious that it’s not even a real vote, it’s fake. How can you call something a business when they don’t even act like a team?

And pretty much everything in the 4th picture, which I outlined in red.

~~~~~
The stuff I underlined in blue are things that, under different circumstances, I would have found quite humorous. But in this case, I found it extremely depressing.
“Frowned upon to be remotely happy (laughter will get you into trouble” (3)
I guess this Halloween celebration back in 2013 was a very rare occasion for them then (I got this picture from the Fantage blog)
“the building has electricity, AC, and heat??” (4)
Clearly this worker was racking his/her brain to find something positive to fill in the “Pros” section.
“V.P. always sleeping at the desk encourages employees to relax as well” (5)
I think it’s so sad yet slightly funny that this employee found a positive way to explain the VP’s laziness, instead of adding it to the Cons list.
“so they watch you like 3rd graders” (5)
Indicates a huge lack of trust. Wait, so is this all the upper management does? Sleep, and watch the employees work? I hope that’s not all they do…
“They will give you a computer” (7)
*table flip* I’m so done with this…
~~~~~

Last, the stuff I highlighted in yellow are the only things that didn’t make me cringe. I found it really uplifting that five out of seven reviewers said that the co-workers are “good to work with” (1), “amazing” (2), “friendly” (5), and “[help] you get through the day” (5).

~~~~~
To reflect, it seems to me that us criticizing Fantage as a whole was really unfair. In fact, it was even selfish, because the employees sound more victimized than we are.
To be fair to the upper management though, I wanted to put these things into consideration as well:
Without the strict, inhumane, yet firm hand of the upper management, would Fantage have collapsed long ago?
Can these reviews be 100% reliable, as they are completely anonymous?
Are the reviews biased, as they were written by people who were fired?
I also want it to be taken into account that some of these reviews were written two years ago. However, even as I’m trying to assure myself with this fact, I still don’t find it very comforting. Two years ago (which is really not that long ago, even this blog is older than that), Fantage was really different, BETTER. We, as users, didn’t feel as pressured to always buy things, and the company didn’t seem as desperate to get money. This was back when there was NO Gold, NO bonus level medals, NO SS Items, NO Cody’s Combos, NO MyMall, NO Vintage Gold, nothing but fun, unique events. It shocks me that, even during this bright period in Fantage’s history, the employees were already THIS unsatisfied. I imagine things only went downhill from there.
~~~~~

Last (sorry this is so long), to make things absolutely clear, I didn’t post this so you would start hating the Fantage upper management (since when has hating done anything?), or praise me like some sort of humanitarian. I posted it so we can all change our perspectives and act more fairly towards the company who has provided us with a game that entertained us for so long. I think the upper management, as bad as they sound, are just trying to keep a business going (although they could do it a lot better, based on these reviews).

I’m getting pretty old to be playing Fantage, I stay only for blogging, but I still think it would be wonderful for them to pick themselves off the ground so the next generation can enjoy it as much as I did when I started playing four years ago. Hopefully, someone from the upper management will read this. I’m still convinced that someone from Fantage does read this blog, since they’ve done several things I’ve suggested in the past (maybe it’s a coincidence).

Even if they don’t read this, at least your perspective will have (hopefully) changed 🙂

  1. Personally, “help you get through the day” doesn’t seem to be so positive for me. That means that you need those other employees to make an otherwise terrible day at work, a tolerable day at work.

  2. Wow. I really feel bad now for thinking that they were money stealers. Of course, they have families too and creating things like gold is just helping them survive. They need money too and they are human as well. You have really good points in that post. Thanks for opening my eyes! And hopefully some other people.. I seriously feel bad for the Fantage employees..

    I remember going through the reviews of ex-employees of the place, I was shocked to see the negative reviews but if you look at everything that they say—it all connects together in game. Rushed events (More like unexpected and unwanted events just to keep us occupied), Not open for changes (Obviously they were open for horrible changes like ‘Gold’). When I think about it…Fantage went down hill when ecoins came out. I liked the events, and you really had to work hard to get 10,000 stars just to get the whole limited set. But when you see a other user walking around as a non-member decked out in the whole limited set because they bought it with ecoins…Gee, makes your hard work look like nothing.

    I loved the game mainly because of my friends. I joined in February 2010, and quit around 2012 then came back in 2013, only to quit again permanently. I think Fantage doesn’t listen to our opinions because they most likely see us as a bunch of young children not knowing what’s the difference between quality over crap, they think we are simple minded and our voices don’t matter. You’d actually be surprised how many of the users are actually mature and somewhat grown.

    But anyways, none of that matters. Fantage will probably never be the same again. I’ve seen many games in their glory days back in the past, only to become a pile of rubble today.

  10. I found the Glassdoor reviews quite awhile ago — I’m sort of a nerd since I like doing research when people are discussing certain topics. (Like when the “Fantage’s employees are horrible” fiasco came around). It’s pretty sad that all these bright-eyed, imaginative young adults are being worked to the bone and starting their career working at a terrible company. But I guess that’s the way the world works — you need experience for a job, and money. (Especially for American university/college students drowning in debt.)

    I really wish there was some way to ‘take action’ as users (or ex-users, since I don’t play Fantage as much as I used to; ever since the events began repeating). I just can’t see a plausible way users/players/bloggers could help the company any more than playing the game.

      I really like how you worded it, I completely agree.
      They should really try to be more professional, like, have a “verified” checkmark on their Facebook page for starters.

  19. Yes, because let’s trust glassdoor.com, a website which isn’t even reliable enough especially with small companies because we like to take scammers and bias netizens’ opinions on things even though there is no evidence whatsoever. For right now, I don’t give two cents on what these reviews are saying. While it could be true, you have to consider the fact that glassdoor.com is an open website for anyone to type and voice on just like Wikipedia without any resources or evidence–making it less trustworthy than it should be. So why are you taking in these informations like they are facts? Besides, you also have to consider the fact that reviews are heavily filled with negative than positive. It is a nature for review sites that people leave reviews because they are generally displease or unsatisfied with something. Other than that, dude, it is only seven reviews. If you think about it, Fantage is a bussiness that needs a lot of employees because duh, who is going to write codes out, draw these pixelized characters out, etc.? It is a hella lot to do, so considering seven people out who knows maybe a hundred or less…These reviews are almost meaningless since they are only a small percentages. But really how do I know? I don’t work in Fantage, I don’t know what goes on in that company behind close doors. So really are these “facts” just “rumours”? That is my opinion on the topic but whatever since your dogmatic brains are so racked about these reviews that could be fake, half-truths, or what-nots.

  26. I actually work at Fantage currently (believe me or don’t, I am sitting in the office right now so it doesn’t make a different to me if you do or don’t) and all of those reviews are 100 percent true. I tried to write one but it was so negative that Glassdoor kept rejecting it.

    Be aware that when you criticize Fantage as a whole, please remember that 95% of the employees (the ones with actual skills like game design, art, and programming) have little to no say in ANYTHING and are forced to work ridiculous overtime.

    We don’t want the events and features to suck. We truly don’t.

    FYI: The Halloween pic was actually a very pleasant day (I am in that photo but you can’t see my face well). We got free food etc. and won prizes. Without the co-workers suggesting these kinds of activities though, they would never happen. And if I recall correctly, nothing like that day has happened since.

    I am very disheartened about the way Fantage has become and its because of that, that we really cannot bring ourselves to care as much. When you are told every day that your work, overtime, and opinions do not matter, then you eventually become jaded.

    I will always love Fantage. It was my first “real job”, gave me a TON of experience, and I love my co-workers to death. Most of the people I was friendly with have since left, got laid off, etc. However the general consensus is always that we love each other, but upper management is a controlling piece of ignorant crap.

        A game like this should be first and foremost fun and engaging.

        Secondarily, there is the money factor. It’s common sense people would only pay if they enjoy playing said fun game.

        Management made decisions that caused the “fun factor” to drop significantly and the “GIVE US MONEY” factor to go up a ridiculous amount.

        All of the previous assessments of Fantage were accurate. Just nobody knew (and how could they know?) about the backstory.

        Anyway 99% of the time, we agree with you guys.

    I wonder if Fantage has seen these reviews– since it was 2 years ago, if they did, perhaps they took action? I’m looking on the sunny disposition here, so despite the repeated and rushed events, maybe they’re planning a lot of new events, but don’t want us to get bored and are just putting events so we can do something? I’m still clinging to that piece of hope in my heart.. Even though Music Mania is pretty much the Blackout with music, it could be a start. Gizmo’s Q-Blast is a really creative idea, too.

  37. The only reason in this world why people create businesses is to make money. Some companies don’t care about their audiences, or they don’t care how they treat their workers. They will just do anything for money. But the best way to make money is not to lock their workers up in a dungeon and make them lose their heads, but is to establish a relation with their audiences/customers, because is their audiences that pays them for them to be up and running. But the irony of the Fantage owners/bosses, is that they don’t care what the audience wants, they just want them to be comfortable, and their workers do all the work. I bet the employees actually have a heart, but their being pushed around like pigs. So if the owner of Fantage keeps this up, he will be the one being pushed around like pigs sooner than he thinks.
