Cyberbullying

Hey guys! So I was watching the new Nigahiga video on Youtube the other day about cyberbullying, and it really got me thinking. Here is the video:

In addition to Ryan Higa’s very controversial opinion, here is my even more controversial opinion.

I believe that what Ryan Higa says about cyberbullying is 100% true. It is indeed a first world problem. It is extremely easy to evade, yet most people who are cyberbullied don’t even choose to do so. If you know me, you know that I never believed cyberbullying was a problem. You know that I just ignore cyberbullies and I legitimately don’t give a crap about them. I never really elaborated on my opinion about cyberbullies, but many of you could guess that if anyone ever complains about cyberbullying to me, I would just say suck it up.

Now before you go on the offensive and lambaste me with criticism, I know that my opinion is strongly worded and expressed. I just really want you guys to know that cyberbullying is so easy to overcome. So many people have come to me before and told me that they were cyberbullied and they didn’t know what to do about it. Honestly, just ignore the bullies and just get offline.

One of the worst things I have encountered is people who actually listen to cyberbullies. For example, if a cyberbully tells you to kill yourself, would you just listen to them and kill yourself? Listening to what cyberbullies say is like believing everything that you read on the internet. Do you really believe everything that is on the internet? Of course not.

Another reason I bring up this topic is because of what I have encountered on the Fantageville Xat box recently. Over the years that I have been on chat, people know I am really strict and edgy when it comes to rules. It isn’t predominantly expressed now, but quite a while ago, a lot of people used to message me on chat about getting cyberbullied. They were always like, “So and so was being mean!! Do something Angela!” And most of you know that I would reply, “Unless so and so was breaking the rules, I can’t do anything about it.” Obviously that response has earned me a sassy reputation, which I am fine with 🙂

I don’t punish people on chat for disrespectful behavior towards me, Moomoo, the mods, or anyone else. The thing is, some moderators on chat seem to do that. “With great power comes great responsibility,” I would say. The moderators KNOW the rules, and they KNOW that they cannot punish people who are disrespectful towards them, yet are technically not breaking the rules. A violation of this rule has happened quite a few times, so mods, I will tell you right now, suck it up and follow the rules or else you lose your job.

Another reason why I bring up this topic now is because I knew that “haters” and “cyberbullies” teemed with life throughout the blog last summer. There were so many more haters, Moomoo and I even made a page for them (what a terrible mistake). Dealing with cyberbullies in that way honestly made everything worse; it annoyed the haters even more and caused them to do more stupid stuff such as copying us and writing terrible things about us. The easiest way for us to avoid the haters was to just ignore them, and that seemingly is working for us quite well this year.

So back to cyberbullying being a first world problem. The words that Ryan Higa said that stood out to me the most was that “If you can’t take it, you shouldn’t be online.” I believe this is true, and many people have said these words to me before. There is no shame in evading bullying. In fact, you should be proud that you made the right decision to just walk away instead of retaliating. I would be so proud of you if you could accomplish this task, because many people really cannot.

So to sum up this post holistically, cyberbullying is such a first world problem. It is just like dropping your phone in the toilet, or losing the cap to your water bottle. The next time you encounter cyberbullying, just think of this straw:

Now suck it up. ~quote Ryan Higa

P.S. Please don’t take this post personally, it is just my opinion on the logistics of cyberbullying. This post is not meant to harm or target any individual.

  6. Ahhh I just watched that video yesterday too 😀 Ryan is really good at stating unpopular opinions while still keeping a very humane perspective.

The thing I always hated is people who claim they’re gonna “kill themselves” because they got caught up in some drama and cyberbullying. Suicide is not a light topic, and them tossing around the term just to get attention is REALLY wrong.

The worst part though, is people who actually believe them and make other people feel guilty for not. I feel like telling them, “ok seriously you’re all like 10, you know nothing about the mental will it takes to suicide, and pretending you’re going to is SO disrespectful to people who have actually been cornered in life and resorted to suicide. you got bullied by some pixels on fantage? suck it up, life has one hell of a lot more hardships than that.”

And yes, I completely agree, ignoring is the best strategy to rid yourself of haters and bullies, because they WANT you to care and be hurt by the words they spitefully threw at you. Bullies are people who have sunk to rock bottom, and they want to push other people below them to feel better about themselves. Which is completely wrong.

The one thing I disagree about Ryan’s opinion is his incomplete definition of cyberbullying. From what I hear, it’s not just some random idiot saying mean things to you. They can hurt you by ruining your reputation (e.g. leaking an embarrassing photo, exposing a secret), blackmailing you into doing something, or cause thousands of people to go against you (e.g. Michelle Phan, in an unfortunate incident, launched her fans like an army against a 13 year old girl on Twitter who disagreed with her). Those things are a bit more difficult to ignore.

    • i agree with you. on instagram and other social media sites, there were SO many accounts that pretended to get “hacked”, bullied, and constantly told their followers they would kill themselves.

for the hacking part, it’s easy to get your account back. whenever you change your password, instagram sends an email just in case it wasn’t you. some people used fake emails. if you use a fake email, it’s your own fault that you can’t get your account back.

about the bullying it social media, when you have your bullies, you’ll usually also have your supporters. and a lot of them. like moomoo and angela, they have a stream of haters, but they have an even bigger stream of supporters and positive group of internet friends.

the suicide part about social media was the part that really bugged me. lots of the accounts i followed would say they would kill themselves. the thing is, they didn’t do it a few times. they did it constantly and every time it was the same thing. i know that depression is a serious thing, but why go on a site that’ll get you more haters, more disrespect, etc? if you need help and support, there will always be other things in your disposal than your followers support. any of these people easily could have told their parents, an adult, or got help. but they didn’t.

    • I agree, that Michelle Phan incident is new to me. That is quite despicable…how she would take advantage of her power like that…. but that was the past so I hope she has changed. Anyhow, I completely agree with you

  10. And what I don’t get is when they do log off and then log on, they care about how the bully says that “oh you’re such a wuss” “oh you’re so scared”
Like yes so you should get the hell off thanks
Real bullying doesn’t really get to me, either. I actually do what Ryan does, and do some other stuff (not bullying though)

Perfect. What you do to cyberbullying: Block/Ignore ‘-‘ Nothing they can do about that.

  14. So, thing is. Everyone says blocking helps. It doesn’t, well, usually. Over.the summer of 4th grade, I encountered several hackers and harassers. These guys weren’t just regular hackers , going like “oh imma hax yo minecraft account whaddya gonna do b*tch”. No, they were cyberhackers. They would hack and use their devices to hear whatever I said, and look through my webcam. They are the ones who “gave” me anxiety. They made me realize just how venemous and merciless some Internet predators are. They would look at my face, hear me speak, and scare me. Hey, I tried the block them. No effect. One of the dudes apparently fapped to me. My source was his friend. I’m not sure if it was the truth, maybe he was trying to intimidate me. Either way, disgusting. About my harassers, they made me ver uncomfortable. Everything they said about me was a dagger. They were also very sexist about it. What have they got against females? [WARNING] Next sentence contains sexual language. They would say things like “i want to penetrate your pussy,” or things like “I eat horse crap. And do you know what you are? a horse LOL” They’d also make several racist comments about my race, I am asian. You know what they’d say. abandoned the Internet for 2 months after that. Many of my online friends thought I had committed suicide. I was, and still am, in a group of suicidal friends. They don’t affect me negatively, in fact, they boost my happiness. They’ve been through the same things that I have. Well, anyways, back on topic. My closest online friend has been through much more than I just said I went through. His cyberhackers were truly merciless. They would take pictures of him and send it to the Internet, as well as himself. They’re his main cause if anxiety too. And the mot unbelievable part is why they did this. No, not for fun. These guys were around their 16’s. My friend played on his cyberhacker’s Minecraft server. One day, he said “my server is better than urs lol” as a joke. His hacker took it too seriously, and that’s the reason. A childish joke taken too far.

So, here’s a message. Stay safe on the Internet. Your parents say it, and they’re not wrong.

    Please, stay safe.

    Chihaki.

    • why didn’t you cover up your video camera? with a piece of cloth of something? do you have to show your face/voice on minecraft? if the hackers were that serious, why didn’t you go to the police, or tell someone (but i do understand telling authority is really, really harder than it seems)? sorry if i didn’t understand your story or misunderstood.

    • Sorry if you were offended by it, I was referring only to the people who used the word “suicide” after something really small on Fantage in order to draw attention to themselves, I didn’t mean it toward anyone that was experiencing problems with family or friends in real life. If you are the latter, then I’m really really glad that you’ve lifted yourself out of it 🙂
